Sandend, Aberdeenshire
Sandend is a small fishing village in the north of Aberdeenshire, at 84 km/52 mi away from Aberdeen.
The Mediterranean climate provides hot, dry summers with an average temperature of 32°C/89°F and cool, mild winters with an average temperature of 10°C/50°F. During the summer months, the Etesian winds, also called “Meltemi” winds, rush over the Aegean Sea and create weather conditions, perfect for high adrenaline windsurfing.
Psalidi Beach is a big, natural beach with pebbles and small sections of sand. Located about 2.9 mi/4.8 km away from Kos town, it is the windiest place on the island and has been for a long time, a meeting point for both local and foreign windsurfers. The thermal side on shore winds are coming from North, Northwest and build up as the day goes by. The average speed is about 27 knots/50 kph and can get stronger, especially on August.
Waves are small and choppy ideal for freestyle, slalom and speed windsurfing. Although Psalidi Beach is suitable mainly for intermediate and advanced surfers, early in the morning the wind is usually lighter and this is the best time for beginners to take lessons. There are many schools operating on the spot, offering top quality gear rentals, rescue boats and lessons.
For those who wish to relax and enjoy the sea and the sun, there are beach bars, showers, restrooms and restaurants. Psalidi Beach is a favorite playground for the water sports enthusiasts. If you are visiting Kos Island and you love windsurfing, this is the place to be!!!
