Marion Bay, Yorke Peninsula
Marion Bay is on the doorstep to some of the best beaches in Australia that host a rich maritime history. Marion Bay is located in Yorke Peninsula, South Australia.
For those, who are addicted to surf and they need an overdose of adrenaline, Sao Lourenco beach is suitable for strong and mystery games with the powerful waves. The beach is situated right out of the town of Ribamar. In order to reach the spot, you will need a car while the access is instant. The spot is very easy to find.
The wave quality is normal that sometimes breaks, providing with the best conditions to experienced surfers. The type of the powerful wave is sand bar and has great right and lefts. The bottom of the sea is sandy with rocks.
During normal days, the wave is short up to 50 m/164 ft high which in good days can reach up to 150 m/492 ft high. The wind, on its best, blows from the east and the southeast.
The swell, on its best form, comes from the northwest while it starts working at 1.5 – 2 m/5 – 6 ft and holds up to 3+ m/10+ ft. The place works perfect on mid tides with best movements of rising tides.
In summer, the wind blows offshore at 7% and the waves swell size is from 1.3-2 m (4-6.5 ft) long most of the time. In autumn, the wind blows offshore at 27% and the swell size is from 1.3-2 m (4-6.5 ft) to 2-3 m (6.5-10 ft). In winter, the waves swell size is from 2-3 m (6.5-10 ft) and at 22% of the time >3 m (10 ft) while the wind blows offshore at 33%. In spring, the wind blows offshore at 22% and the waves swell size is from 2-3 m (6.5-10 ft) most of the time.
During week days, the place is empty leaving all the waves to you. On weekends, a few surfers will come to dominate the waves. Dangers among others include rocks so please be careful.
Sao Lourenco is a great spot that allows experienced surfers to enjoy nice sessions. If you don’t have that much of experience, it is suggested to visit one of the local schools that will teach you the basics.
