Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world and it is situated in Portugal. It is the capital and the largest city of the country, lying in the western Iberian Peninsula in the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus.
If you find yourself in Lisbon, it is essential to visit nearby beaches and try to ride the waves. One of the best beaches around, appropriate for experienced surfers is Cubiculo beach. The place is near Carcavelos and you need a car or public transportation to get there from Lisbon.
After parking your vehicle, you need to walk for about 5-15 minutes, in order to get to the exact spot. The place has very consistent surf breaks, about 150 days/year. The wave quality is regional classic and the wave type is reef-rocky. The waves have great right and left direction and the bottom of the sea is a reef, full of corals and sharp rocks.
The wave is hollow, fast, powerful and fun, but it can also be powerless depending on the day and swell. On normal days its length reaches up to 50 m/164 ft that on good days gets up to 150 m/492 ft. The optimum conditions for the spot is when the wind blows from the north, northwest or northeast and the swell comes from the west, southwest or south.
The swell starts working at less than 1 m/3 ft. Although, the beach offers excellent waves, it is empty during weekdays and weekends, leaving the entire place for you and maybe some other surfers who had the same idea. Nevertheless, Cubiculo is a great place to surf and if you are nearby, you should definitely try it!!!
