Mountaineering in Mammoth Lakes, Yosemite National Park, California USA

Mammoth Lakes is located near Mammoth Mountain, in California’s eastern Sierra about 100 mi/161 km south of Nevada State Line, 9 mi/14.5 km northwest of Mount Morrison, at an elevation of 7880 ft/2402 m, Mono County, California, USA.

If you have probes, avalanche training, shovels and beacons, you are at the perfect place for mountaineering. Mammoth Lakes is blessed with long cool springs and deep winter snows, that helps preserve the mountain snow-pack and gives some of the nicest back-country conditions in the West.

Mammoth Lakes offers innumerable acres of freedom in the form of untracked powder. You can discover the world beyond lift lines and groomed slopes. The difference between climbing and hiking, is vertical height.

Mountain climbing is all about rock faces, ice falls,  ice faces, rocks crags, glaciers and lakes.The weather is totally unpredictable in mountainous terrain.

In winter time, whiteouts are common and storms are frequent. Storms on mountain tops or summits are often, because they attract clouds, but at the same time, the rest of the area is sunny. So be always well prepared!
