The metropolitan area of Adelaide is famous for the variety and great number of diving sites it has to offer (you can visit some of the most impressive shipwrecks in the whole world here). The waters have the perfect temperature for scuba diving (warm during the summer and crystal clear during the winter), and are generally friendly and uncrowded.
One of the most popular destinations for scuba divers of all levels is the South Australian wreck (or better known as Glenelg Dredge). The ship is 40 m/131 ft long and 8 m/26 ft wide, and was purposely sunk in 1985, creating an artificial reef close to the shore.
You can actually enter and explore the main hold and cabins, but bear in mind some parts of the ship are quite unstable. The exact diving site is marked with a buoy Access is by boat from West Beach boat ramp.
