Wenatchee is the largest city of Chelan County, located in North Central Washington and lies on the west side of the Columbia River. The city is also known as the Apple Capital of the world, due to the valley's many apple cultivations.
Big Chiwaukum Mountain is the highest peak of the Chiwaukum Mountains. The top elevation of the mountain is at 8081 ft/2463 m, suitable for climbing all year long. In order to approach the East Route, you hike up the Chiwaukum Creek Trail and North Fork Chiwaukum Creek Trail that leads you to a broad bench below the summit.
The East side of the peak is a short and steep wall, providing an interesting scrambling route, suitable for advanced climbers. It is a rewarding climb because once you reach the unassuming peak, you can admire a wonderful view of the mountains and the lakes around in an alpine scenery.
The summit can be reached in one day, but for the most adventurous climbers, this climb can be combined with overnight camping. If you visit East Route in early season, you will need an ice axe and crampons.
