With a parade through the town in June 11th, in Kapaau village, locals celebrate Kamehameha Day. Coast Guard Beach is considered to be as one of the most extreme and dangerous beaches on Big Island suitable for professional surfers only. The beach is reef coral, extremely rocky, with a world class wave quality and fast, powerful waves.
The wind direction is coming from south and southeast while the swell size often starts working at 2 m/6 ft and holds up to 5 m/16 ft and over. Due to the high skills level required, the beach is almost empty during weekends as very few experienced surfers can be spotted. Surfers should be careful of rip currents, urchins and sharp rocks.
For accommodation you can either stay in Hilo Town or, if you would like to be closer to Coast Guard Beach, at Kapaau village.
