The summit of the mountain lies above the forest line and the terrain consists of mostly lava rocks and shrubs due to it’s alpine weather conditions.
Mana Road Trail starts at the Mauna Kea access road and links with Saddle Rd around Mauna Kea mountain.It is 45 mi/72.5 km long (one way), about six to eight hours biking. The route is considered to be one of the best dirt distance rides in Hawaii, because you travel around the mountain, through Parker Ranch with wild cattle, bulls and horses, fantastic views of Mauna Kea, Hilo and the North Kohala mountains.
The trail is suitable for all skill levels with an elevation gain of 4200 ft/1280 m, and it is entirely dirt surfaced. A good physical condition though is required because of the long ride. Bikers should take with them water and snacks and wear long sleeve, water-resistant jacket and long riding pants as the weather can be cold and wet.
Mana Road route is a great fun ride for those who enjoy cross country riding. In the town of Hilo there are shops that you can buy or rent mountain bike equipment, as well as maps with the trail roads.
