Bayfront beach is located in Hilo, Hawaii, which is the most populated city of the island. Hilo is an old fashioned bay front town, with tropical rain forest climate all year long and home of the Tsunami Museum, dedicated to the understanding of the 1946 Pacific Tsunami.
Hilo hosts its own international airport right outside the city, at about 10 minutes away by car, with unfortunately no public transportation available from the airport. Along the sea side, there are many shops to buy or rent surfing gear as well as surf schools to take lessons, although the power of the waves is not recommended for beginners.
Bayfront beach is ideal for experienced surfers, easy to find, with a world class wave quality taking both right and left directions. There are two shore access points and the waves are very powerful when you’ re trying to get in, so you must have strong paddle abilities. The spot offers a good wind direction and swell size that starts at 1.0 m-1.5 m / 3 ft-5 ft and holds up to 5 m / 16 ft and over while the bottom of the sea is sandy with few rocks.
Bayfront is a popular surfing destination so during weekends is very crowded with mostly classic long boarders and few short boarders. Surfers should be careful of sea fleas because they bite and it really hurts.
