Rising from the Eastern Cape and running along the Kwazulu-Natal's western border, the Drakensberg mountain range is the highest in South Africa standing at 3482 m/11424 ft in height. The mountains are capped by a layer of basalt of 1400 m/4593 ft thick and offers amazing flora and fauna.
Sani Pass is a great area for mountain biking, offering an exquisite scenery and challenging route either up the Sani Pass into Lesotho or through the surrounding district roads. The spot is open all year round, however it has unpredictable weather changes, like from sunny to freezing.
The route is a 72-80 km/45-50 mi return route and level of difficulty here is intermediate to hard. The tour last about 6 hours and the trail head is the Sani Lodge. To get a picture of how challenging the route is, you start at an altitude of 1674 m/5492 ft above sea level and finish off at an altitude of 3200 m/10498 ft above sea level!!
