Mount Everest, formerly known as Eagle Mountain is a few kilometers away from Harrismith. The spot is within a private nature reserve and has all it takes for an epic rock climbing. The spot has over 140 sport routes, 12 multi-pitched bolted routes, approximately 20 traditional lines and some 120 problems.
Rock climbing on Mount Everest accommodates both the novice and expert climber. Level of difficulty here is rated moderate with grades ranging from 8-28. The 140 sport routes range from 8-28 in grade while the multi-pitched ones range between 11-28.
Climbing conditions are excellent most of the year, depending on the choice of crag. The general climate here is normally cooler compared to other climbing areas in South Africa since the crags are at an approximate 2000 m/6561 ft height above sea level. Advance booking is necessary.
