The 45 mi (72.42 km) long lake’s capacity is 648000 ac/2622 km² on a very low desert elevation of 482 ft (146.91 m). The concrete dam that makes a glorious arch was built between 1934 and 1938 by the United States Bureau of Reclamation.
There are two aqueducts that need to be filled with water and that is exactly the lake’s primary purpose. Except from that purpose the lake is also available for fun and especially kitesurfing.
It is an ideal hot-spot for kitesurfers with its size, the perfect climate and the warm glassy water. Average wind is coming from northwest, west and southeast. Average wind speed is 4 – 6 knots. Air temperature varies from 14 – 39°C /57.2 – 102.2°F.
You can have fun kitesurfing by the shorelines, admiring at the same time the magnificent scenery of the canyon and the Desert Mountains that surround you. Speed, perfect slalom and major air runs are just some of the specifications that are offered by the lake.
