Botany Bay is located in Sydney, at about 13 km/8.1 mi in the south of Sydney's CBD (Central Business District). Sydney Airport, lies on the northwestern side of Botany Bay. It is a famous spot for its amazing marine life and it is popular among water-sports enthusiasts.
Woniora is a wreck site at the center of the entrance to Botany Bay. The SS Woniora was a collier that sank in 1882. The average depth here is at 60 m/196.9 ft and the maximum depth is at 63 m/206.7 ft. Visibility is good and ranges from 10 m/32.8 ft to 30 m/98.4 ft.
Water temperature is up to 21°C/69.8°F in summer and early autumn months and between 14-18°C/57.2-64.4°F in winter. The dive site is suitable for experienced divers only, due to its depth and the strong currents. Woniora can only be dived when there are no ships departing or entering Botany Bay.
Expect to see large sections of wreckage as the stern, propellers and the rudder. Apart from the wreck, divers may come across with huge numbers of bream, yellow-tail and other fish. It is a crowded spot, so be careful of the boat traffic.
Finally, you can take a coastal walk and admire the amazing ocean and Botany bay views. Note: book a boat dive at a dive center that visits Woniora.
