Avalon Beach, Avalon
Avalon is a suburb in northern Sydney, at about 35 km/21 mi north of Sydney's CBD (Central Business District). According to myths, Avalon represents the final resting place of the legendary King Arthur.
However, the main reason why most people visit the city is because of the big wave surfing conditions, offered in Punta de Lobos beach. The beach is widely known for its dark sand and the world class wave quality, one of the best in Chile.
With very consistent wind frequency and wind direction blowing from the south and southeast, this spot turns up to be a perfect place for big wave surfers. The size of the swell starts working at less than 1 m/3 ft and holds up to 5 m/16 ft and over. The point break wave has left direction and is fast and hollow while the bottom of the sea is sandy with a few rocks.
The weather conditions are ideal during winter months. Perfect for experienced and professional surfers only, this beach is an amazing playground, offering lots of excitement and fun. Punta de Lobos beach is home to many national surfing competitions as well as the Quicksilver international big wave contest.
Prepare yourself to enjoy a strong, powerful wave, considered to be the best surfing destination in Latin America. In order to enter the break, you have to demonstrate perfect timing otherwise strong waves can throw you against big rocks. Keep in mind that there are heavy currents and the water is cold all year round.
