The Pillars of Hercules is a great place for scuba diving as well as for snorkeling. The spot is close to the English Harbor in the south of Antigua. The rich marine life and the beautiful formation of the rocks are the two major reasons why the Pillars of Hercules constitute a great spot.
Antigua presents a large variety of water activities. The main reason is good weather conditions, allowing fans of water-sports to enjoy the sea all year round. However, weather may get worse, due to tropical storms and hurricanes between July and October. The intensity of the phenomenon is not as strong as to make impossible snorkeling during these months.
In Pillars of Hercules an inexperienced snorkeler may learn how to dive. There are many snorkel schools, with experienced instructors, who may help experts too. The average water temperature is 25˚C/77˚F. The maximum depth that a snorkeler could reach is at 8 m/26 ft and the average depth is at 3 m/9.8 ft. The underwater visibility is good and averages from 5 m/16 ft to 10 m/32 ft.
Every snorkeler will absolutely be impressed by the great diversity of reef life in Caribbean, especially in Pillars of Hercules. There is plenty of colorful corals and huge sponges, eagle rays, lobsters, snappers, barracuda, turtles, moray eels and occasionally reef sharks and dolphins. Additionally there are tritons horn, blue tang and sergeant majors which are rare fish but can often be found.
