Birling Gap is a beautiful, single beach, located close to Eastbourne. With an abundance of rock pools, the reef break offers very consistent surf. The optimum time to visit the spot is at either low tide or high tide. In addition, the best wind direction is from the west, southwest and the ideal swell direction is from the southwest. The surf site offers both left and right hand waves.
In summer, the wind blows offshore at 65%, in autumn the wind blows at 53%, in winter at 49% and in spring at 44%. Surfers can explore the waves with swell sizes that can start from 1-1.5 m/3-5 ft and hold up to 2 m/6 ft. Birling Gap is suitable for both the novice and advanced surfer. Note that, the best periods for waves, are autumn and winter. Last but not least, the best tide movement is rising and falling tides and the ideal tide position is mid tide. Be careful of submerged rocks.
