How to get there and other valuable information:
Ameland is one of the West Frisian Islands, just off the north coast of The Netherlands. You can get there by ferry from Holwerd in the mainland of Friesland (a province west of Groningen). Ballum, one of Ameland’s four villages, is also were the local airport is, the Ameland Airport. During low tide, one can cross from Friesland to Ameland on foot too! Try this if mudflat hiking is among your interests.
Ameland’s four villages, Hollum, Ballum, Nes and Buren, are connected by bus service, so getting around the 18km-long island will not be a limiting factor. Bus Route #130 connects Hollum and Ballum, whereas Route #132 connects Buren and Nes.
