Roquetas de Mar is a municipality, located in the west of Almeria province. It is the most popular town of Almeria, with direct coastal access to the Mediterranean Sea.
It was once a traditional fishing town, but now is a low key tourist resort town, designated a National Tourist Amenity since 1967. It is called the sunniest region of all Europe, with more than 3000 hours of sunshine every year, and low rainfall. Roquetas de Mar enjoys a Mediterranean sub-tropical climate, with temperatures from 16°C to 30°C, and June through September being considered as quite warm months (26°C/78.80°F to 30°C/86°F). Water temperature is quite warm too (20°C/68°F to 24°C/75.20°F).
During summer, it is a high season resort, with a lot of windsurfing and water sport activity going on. Its many clean, blue-flag, sandy beaches (more than 10 km/6 mi), and mild wind conditions make it an unique destination for beginners. The advanced windsurfers will have a chance to improve their skills when wind gets stronger. The small waves are easy for the inexperienced ones.
