Overall the city is surrounded by Avon, Heathcote and Waimakariri Rivers, and the Canterbury Plains. The climate is considered to be temperate, with cool and mild summers (maximum temperature 23°C/73.4°F), and cold and frosty winters (temperatures fall below 0°C/32°F frequently).
Waimakariri River starts its journey from the Southern Alps and continues its course for approximately 151 km/93 mi long, before merging with the Pacific Ocean. It is a braided river, with many rapids, twists and turns, especially near the Gorge, consisting the ideal destination for jet boating lovers.
