Volcano National park is located at 30 mi/48 km in the southwest of Hilo Town in Hawaii. The park was established in 1916 and is a combination of unique ecosystems and diverse environments that range from the sea, to the summit of the world's biggest volcano, Mauna Loa, as well as Kilauea witch is the world's most active volcano.
The park is an international World Heritage site and provides the visitors with several exciting biking opportunities. Volcano Escape Road is 8 mi/12 km long (out and back), with an elevation gain at 685 ft/209 m and starts at Thurston Lava Tube. It is an easy, suitable for beginners fun ride that takes you through the lovely rain forest, with fern trees and wild pigs and it is entirely dirt surfaced. Escape Road will intersect The Crater Rim Road near the Volcano Park entrance.
In the town of Hilo, there are shops that you can buy or rent mountain bike equipment, as well as maps with the trail roads. Accommodation, apart from the town of Hilo, for those who wish to stay on the mountains and enjoy the majestic rainforest, can be found at Volcano Village, very close to the National Park.
