Watamu Beach is located at 120 km/74 mi in the north of Mombasa and 28 km/17 mi in the south of Malindi, the nearest big town.
The shoreline of this area consists of white sandy beach and offshore corals forming three bays, namely Watamu bay, Turtle bay and Blue Lagoon. The bay is protected by a coral reef almost 0.5 km/546.81 yd off the shore. The reef provides with calm waters within the reef along with amazing waves allowing for great kayaking experience especially when the tide is high.
There is a large mangrove creek towards the southern end of Watamu beach called the Mida Creek. It is characterized by dramatic currents and outcrop corals standing at 6 km/3 mi in length.
If you want to make your trip even more exciting, better head towards the Mida creek and feast your eyes to incredible bird life and beautifully complex system of small tidal waterways considered to be nurseries of the ocean…..and on a good day, when visibility is at its best, you can view the under water life even without entering the water.
