Kailua Kona is located in the North Kona District, Hawaii. It is a lively seaside town with sunny tropical weather all year long and lies at the bottom of the Hualalai Volcano.
The town has many interesting historical sites and is famous for its Kona coffee cultivations and the crystal clear sea. Kona International Airport is located at fifteen minutes in the south of the main town. Along the sea side, there are shops to buy or repair spear gun gear, as well as take lessons if you are a beginner.
However, Old Kona Airport Beach is not recommended for beginners. It is a very exciting spot for spearfishing with an average depth of 8 m/26.2 ft and maximum depth 15 m/49 ft. The bio-diversity of the bottom is outstanding. The sea is reef coral with medium current and excellent visibility.
You will come across lobsters, coral reefs, colored tropical fish and lava tubes. Divers should be careful of sea currents, boat traffic and dangerous species. Beyond the reef, the bottom drops off quickly into very deep water.
